Instances of an invention or innovation serving an entirely different purpose besides its original one are not uncommon. NASA developed a new technology to aid future space missions, and it has solved one of the biggest challenges in the EV industry: the ability to charge EVs within 5 minutes. Currently, the fastest “superchargers” available take 15-20 minutes using 520 amperes.
Charging an EV fully in 5 minutes requires charging cables to deliver electric current at 1,400 amperes. However, NASA’s advanced temperature control technique, dubbed subcooled flow boiling, enabled the delivery of current at 2,400 amperes, over-achieving by a long shot… Great job, NASA!
