Zero-emission multiple unit (ZEMU) trainset in San Bernardino, California is about to become North America’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train. On November 12 the agency began the final required testing which will continue through January 2025.
The first hydrogen-powered passenger train, aka hydrail, debuted in Germany in 2018. San Bernardino plans to use the ZEMU trainset on a daily basis, making it the first in North America to take this leap in a sustainable way. Last year, Quebec, Canada tested the hydrogen passenger trains, but for only 3 months.
