The cat is out of the bag; social media is being controlled by billionaire men who are not fact-checking or moderating content. In fact, on X and other sites, they are posting lies and hate-speech. Is that what we want and deserve?
Mastodon is a newer, decentralized social media network that is designed to prevent any single person from controlling the platform and its users. It recently decided to create a non-profit for the EU, that will control operations. Eugen Rochko is Mastodon’s founder, and he reports that it has over 833K monthly users. He promises that Mastodon will never be for sale, and created a US based nonprofit to help access grants and nonprofit funding.
