A Playful Prescription for Cognitive Health

I’m deeply passionate and driven by anger about the relentless battle we face against insidious enemies like Cancer, MS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.

If only these cowardly opponents dared to face us openly on the battlefield after Mel Gibson’s stirring speech about freedom, the world might be better.

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon in the battle against Alzheimer’s.

The FDA recently approved donanemab (Kisunla), a groundbreaking medication that slows cognitive decline in early or mild Alzheimer’s patients.

Clinical trials have shown that donanemab can reduce cognitive decline by an impressive 35% compared to a placebo. But beating Alzheimer’s requires more than just a magic pill. It’s time for society to come together, armed with exercise, diet, social engagement, and a little fun.

Move It or Lose It

Let’s face it: our brains love a good workout just as much as our bodies do. Regular physical exercise isn’t just about keeping fit; it increases blood flow to the brain and promotes the formation of new neural connections. So, whether it’s a brisk walk, a dance class, or a round of golf, getting moving is key to keeping those brain cells firing on all cylinders.

Feed Your Brain

When it comes to brain health, you really are what you eat. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats supports brain health and reduces the risk of cognitive decline. I know pizza sounds great, but just for a moment, imagine enjoying a delicious meal of grilled fish, a hearty salad drizzled with olive oil, and a glass of red wine, knowing you’re doing your brain a favor!

Stay Social

Humans are social creatures, and maintaining personal relationships can contribute significantly to cognitive resilience. Whether it’s chatting with a neighbor, attending a family gathering, or joining a club, staying socially engaged helps keep our brains sharp. So, pick up the phone, schedule that coffee date, and keep those connections strong.

Mind the Body

Managing chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol is essential for maintaining cognitive health. Regular check-ups and proper medical care ensure our bodies and brains function optimally.

Game On! The Cognitive Benefits of Video Games

Here’s where the fun really begins. Video games, particularly management games, can stimulate cognitive processes and help maintain brain functions. Games like SimCity or Motorsport Manager require strategic thinking. My strategy is simple: if you don’t succeed at first, blame it on your poorly crafted plan and try again.

Brain Training for Memory and Problem-Solving

Puzzle games and brain-training apps aren’t just for kids. They improve memory and problem-solving skills, providing a fun and effective mental workout. Besides, solving puzzles is the perfect mix of ‘I’m a genius!’ and ‘Why is this piece not fitting?”

Sharpening Cognitive Skills

Action and strategy games can enhance attentional control, executive functions, and cognitive flexibility. Games like Starcraft or action-packed adventures like The Legend of Zelda can boost brain power while offering hours of entertainment. Who knew saving a virtual world could be so good for your brain?

A Team Effort

Combating Alzheimer’s is a team effort that requires society to come together with a multifaceted approach. So, let’s lace up our sneakers, whip up a healthy feast, call a friend, and fire up those gaming consoles. Together, we can beat Alzheimer’s one step, one meal, and one game at a time.
