Valentine’s Day is celebrated annually on February 14 and has become a significant cultural, commercial, and even religious l celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

However, think of all the helium heart balloons, cheaply-assembled plush toys, candy wrappers, plastic gift wrap, and glitter sitting in landfills for hundreds of years as reported by Good Good Good.

In fact, Plastic Oceans, a nonprofit working to end plastic pollution, reports that February 14, by itself, represents an increase of 9 million kilograms of carbon dioxide on top of everything “normally” released into the atmosphere.

Sustainable ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day include star gazing, visiting a park, volunteering, planting, and a spa day at home. Use your imagination and make it a wonderful Valentine’s Day (if you celebrate) and that includes our planet.
