The thousands of persons awaiting trial at U.S. federal courts and D.C. for just possessing cannabis will now be set free, and the crime will be expunged from their records. President Joe Biden gave the executive order on October 6, offering hope for full cannabis decriminalization soon.

“No one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana,” Biden said. He has asked the Department of Health and Human Services and the office of the Attorney General to start reviewing how cannabis is scheduled under federal law.
