Also called macroalgae, seaweed is gradually getting the recognition it deserves globally as countries like the U.S. and China commit to growing it on a large scale. The U.K. is the latest to come on board, in April it opened the first seaweed industry facility in Scotland called the Seaweed Academy. It will leverage the sea plant’s health, economic, and environmental benefits. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, seaweed farming is economically beneficial.

Seaweeds can also absorb and eat up CO2; therefore, growing seaweeds commercially could help the world mitigate climate change. The seaweed industry generated $14.7 billion in 2019.
