The world is on the way to decarbonization, and solar technology currently accounts for about 4% of global energy generation, with the installed solar capacity nearly doubling from 2017 to 2020. Now that the world looks to make solar its largest electricity source by 2026, here are some interesting talking points.
French physicist Edmond Becquerel first discovered solar electricity and photovoltaic cells in 1839. Nearly 100 years later, in 1954, scientists at Bell Labs in the United States developed the first silicon photovoltaic cell, also called a solar panel. Solar is currently the third-largest source of renewable electricity, and China, the U.S., Japan, and Germany lead the global solar market. The applications of solar power have also expanded to the auto industry. For example, Lightyear, Aptera, and Sono Motors have developed solar EVs.
