Renewable grid storage batteries must be cost-effective and durable, or they won’t be beneficial. Lithium-ion batteries are the most widely used and they last about ten years. Given that, industry experts have been trying to produce better alternatives. One startup has done it.
Ambri recently commissioned its first molten-salt battery storage system for Microsoft, made from calcium and antimony. The company’s battery cells are not only cheaper than the lithium-ion ones; they are also cleaner and have more than twice the lifespan of lithium. Ambri is now working towards full commercialization of its technology. The company’s innovation hub in Massachusetts will allow for a production capacity of 200,000 battery cells per year starting in 2023.
