The European Union took strong steps to hold big technology and digital-based companies accountable this year. Over the past months, it has rolled out laws addressing issues on privacy and monopoly prevention, aiming to provide users with more choices and more security.

One EU law, the Digital Markets Acts (DMA), is now getting Apple to loosen its app store policies and allow sideloading alternative app stores on its mobile devices. The EU is Apple’s second biggest market, and some of the tech giant’s officials have said the changes might come with Apple’s new iOS version. All tech companies are required to comply with DMA no later than 2024 or else be fined up to 20% of annual global revenue.
