For those who are too young to remember the days of vinyl records, we’ll explain the phrase “the flip side”. Back in the day, before digital music, there were analog music and record stores selling vinyl records (albums). In fact, The Gap was originally a record store that also sold jeans since teens and college kids loved that apparel. The vinyl records had different music on each side of the albums, Side A and Side B and the phase flip side was common parlance.

In the 21st Century, there is clearly a flip side to all the benefits and conveniences of technology everywhere in our lives. The vehicle you drive is collecting data on you while at the same it offering you beneficial information about crash prevention, navigation, tire pressure, engine, and oil needs, Thankfully, we don’t see many cars broken down on the side of the road.

The flip side of receiving terrific intel about our vehicles is pernicious. Not only is personal data being collected about all drivers, but it is also being sold at a big profit to third parties. Automakers are monetizing mobility data to the tune of hundreds of billions of US dollars according to a report by McKinley & Company.
