Easter, or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating Jesus’s resurrection from the dead. The New Testament describes it as occurring on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus Christ, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day fasting, prayer, and penance period.
For those who celebrate the cultural or secular holiday, it is time to paint hard-boiled eggs and give children baskets full of candy (especially chocolate bunnies) and painted hard-boiled eggs. Easter egg hunts are popular where children look for eggs and other treats. Peter Cottontail is a popular character.
