Ten years ago, California banned single-use plastic bags from grocery store checkouts, and the grocers were allowed to replace them with thicker “reusable” plastic bags. That turned out to be a big mistake.

Last week, California’s Governor Newsom signed SB 1053, which will ban all plastic bags from grocery store checkouts. It will take effect January 1, 2026. Please remember to bring your own cloth bags when doing all your shopping!
