The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on January 4 that it has approved the IND (Investigational New Drug) application by ANANDA Scientific, a biotech pharma company based in Colorado. The approval allows for CBD (cannabidiol) to be clinically tested for the treatment of OUD (Opioid Use Disorder). CBD comes from the cannabis sativa plant, aka hemp plant.

Nantheia™ ATL5, is the name of the new IUD. ANANDA Scientific will perform the clinical trial at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, alongside a team of UCLA medical scientists. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is funding the trial. According to the CDC, “Overdose deaths involving opioids including heroin, prescription opioids, and synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, have increased more than 6 times since 1999”.
