Some countries are already fully embracing the need for all citizens to be more green. According to Reuters, 90% of Norway’s vehicle sales in 2024 were EVs. Norway is a civic-minded country that selected clean energy sources for its citizens, and the northern country relies mainly on renewable hydropower to meet its energy needs.
New York state is a third the size of Norway, with about 600,000 more citizens. It recently passed legislation that will fine fossil fuel companies (coal, oil, and gas) for damages caused and decades of deceptive practices. For 25 years, fossil fuel companies will pay $75 billion to New York state.
The fine amounts will be based on each company’s greenhouse gas emissions from 2000 to 2018. The collected fines will go into the Climate Superfund. Perhaps more US states can do a better job of making clean energy changes in 2025 and beyond.
