New meat grown in a lab

The US Dept of Agriculture (USDA) gave approval for two lab-grown meat companies to start scaling. Both companies are California-based, and they can now produce and sell products for commercial use in the US. This should help those so inclined to help the environment have another option. Livestock accounts for 14.5% of all global greenhouse gas emissions, according to UC Davis.

Upside Foods is a “cultured meat” company that was covered in AGREEN1 in the November 21, 2022 issue. It was Berkeley was founded in 2015 in Berkeley, California. They cultivate lab-grown poultry, meat, and seafood products. Chef Dominique Crenn is the first US female chef to receive a two and then a 3-star Michelin rating. Her venue, Bar Crenn in San Francisco serves Upside Foods products.

GOOD Meat is the cultivated meat arm of Just Eat Inc, a pioneer in the lab-grown eggs, poultry, and seafood industries. GOOD Meat also received USDA approval last month. See AGREEN1 April 3 issue for more details.
