As we face this new era of powerful AI technology, some leaders in the tech industry have become seriously worried about a potential disaster that could cause serious harm to the world and humanity. On March 28, this group of tech leaders, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, signed the petition organized by the nonprofit Future of Life Institute, asking AI developers to stop developing new AI systems for at least six months, enough time for the technology sector to study and fully understand how much things emerging AI systems could do.

“We call on all labs to immediately pause for at least six months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4,” the open letter says. GPT-4 is the new AI technology launched recently by OpenAI as the advanced successor to the popular ChatGPT. If AI actors fail to acknowledge their request, they said governments should step in and initiate a moratorium.

Italy has banned ChatGPT temporarily, citing privacy concerns. The UK is designing regulations and the EU has the AI Act. While not banned, ChatGPT is not available in China, Russia, Iran or North Korea.
