The Marijuana Policy Project has published a report on adult-use cannabis tax revenue generated by 18 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (D.C.) that have legalized the market. The report covered revenues generated annually from 2014, when adult-use sales began in Colorado and Washington states, to March 2022.
The regulated states have generated taxes totaling $11.2 billion since 2014. California reported the highest revenue in 2021, with over $1.2 billion. Total revenue for all 18 states and D.C. in 2021 was more than $3.7 billion, a 25% increase from 2020. It will be interesting to see how the numbers grow once New York state begins selling in late 2022 or early 2023. Growing greener on green.
