Before any commercially-made product can be quality-assured, certified safe for use or consumption, and allowed to sell internationally, it must meet standards usually developed by bodies like ASTM International (the American Society for Testing and Materials). Among the products, ASTM International now develops standards for cannabis, cannabis-related products, and processes through its Committee D37 on cannabis, formed in 2017.

Last week, the committee approved four new standards to add to its growing list of more than 40 standards for cannabis now. Standard D8375 will provide a method to establish cannabinoid content in cannabis and hemp samples and will be used for forensics purposes. Standard D8399 will aid in establishing pesticide concentration levels in cannabis and hemp to ensure they meet requirements within appropriate jurisdictions. Standard D8442 will help quality control for cannabis to ensure consumers’ safety. And Standard D8469 will aid the cannabis industry in testing for metals in the plant.
