The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act, a bill to expand research into cannabis-derived medications, passed the U.S. House of Representatives in July. It was approved by the Senate in November and signed by President Biden on December 2.
The research bill, sponsored by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-California), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), and Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), will ensure that research on CBD and other potentially beneficial cannabis-derived substances are allowed access to sound science protocols while also reducing regulatory barriers currently involved with cannabis research. The bill also requires the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health to submit a report to Congress on the potential harms and benefits of cannabis use.
