A new bill in Maine was recently passed without the Governor’s signature. Bill LD536 went into effect on August 9. As we approach the quarter mark into the 21st Century, Maine became the 12th US state to pass a law allowing for green burials.

Some states such as California have passed green burial laws, but they are not yet in effect. Washington was the first state to enact green burial legislation. Green burials are actively legal in Colorado, Oregon, Nevada, Vermont, New York, Nevada, and now Maine.

Many people prefer to be composted because they are living an Earth friendly lifestyle, and they understand the negative impact of burial and cremation. Some chose green burial as a less expensive option after they die, as the cost of green burial is currently $2.5K to $5K versus $7K minimum for cremation or embalming/burial. Personal choice is what most people want.
