Rhode Island’s Governor Dan McKee signed into law the Rhode Island Cannabis Act on May 25, making Rhode Island the 19th state in the U.S. to legalize adult-use cannabis.

Existing medical operators will be eligible to obtain licenses to sell recreational cannabis starting on December 1 for $125,000 fee. The state will also allow social equity applicants and worker-based cooperatives to sell recreational cannabis. It will tax adult-use cannabis products at an additional 10%, including a 3% local tax. However, the law allows municipalities without medical marijuana dispensaries to prohibit adult-use sales if they elect to do so.
